We recently managed to get hold of some good quality photographs of a contemporary kitchen we fitted a little while ago.

This particular design was part of a very old, Grade II listed barn conversion project, and provides a lovely contemporary contrast to the character building it is part of.

Carters Barn, Lymington 2Our client wanted a modern kitchen with matte white lacquer doors in a handleless style. These contrast beautifully with the dark granite worktop and are complemented by stainless steel and black SIEMENS appliances, with a matching glass splashback.

The kitchen also boasts an integrated American fridge freezer, comfortably sitting between the two oven housing units.

Graham used a contrasting oak plinth beneath the base units for this design. This ties in beautifully with the oak structures in the ceiling and the doors to other rooms in the house. Carters Barn, Lymington

It is very easy to put a contemporary kitchen in an old building – but equally as easy for it to stand out like a sore thumb if thought has not been put into how this will tie in with the rest of the house. This is why small touches like the oak plinth in this design make all the difference! When designing this kitchen, Graham and his client worked together to try and create a neutral kitchen that would look good, but not distract from the character features of the property – particularly the lovely wooden beams. For this reason they chose a white kitchen with no handles and units with no unusual features that might catch attention.
